About Norvasc 5mg

Norvasc 5mg is an antihypertensive drug. It is used for the lowering of blood pressure and for the treatment of angina (chest pain). It contains the active ingredient Amlodipine. Norvasc 5mg belongs to the class of drugs called calcium channel blockers.

How effective is Norvasc 5mg?

Norvasc 5mg  is a very effective drug used for the management of high blood pressure (hypertension), angina and certain other cardiovascular conditions. Norvasc 5mg works by preventing the narrowing of blood vessels which in turn improves blood flow. Lowering of blood pressure may minimise the risk of getting a heart attack in patients.

What dose should I choose?

In adults, the initial dose is 5 mg (1 tablet) per day which may be increased to 10 mg (2 tablets) daily.

In children, the initial dose is 2.5 mg (half tablet) per day which may be increased to 5 mg (1 tablet) daily.

Norvasc 5mg tablet can be taken before or after meals. Take the medicine at the same time every day with a glass of water. Norvasc 5mg must not be taken with grapefruit juice.

What are the side-effects and other warnings when taking Norvasc 10mg?

Not everyone taking Norvasc 5mg experiences any side-effects. Some side-effects may disappear on their own as your body becomes adjusted to the drug.

Some common side-effects include:

  • Fluid retention (edema)
  • Headache
  • Sleepiness
  • Palpitations
  • Muscle cramps
  • Swelling in the ankles

If your side-effects persist or worsen, or you experience any unusual symptoms, immediately notify your doctor.
